Wade Fairchild and I decided we wanted to paint a particular bay or inlet near Saybrook so we left the others to pick out a suitable spot, which we found very difficult to do. After he showed me where Kathryn Hepburn lived, we found a small, carefully mowed patch of green amid the dense marshlands at the inlet. We set up our easels and were busily painting when several golfers approached and asked if they could play through. It seemed we were on one of the tees?! There was no visible fairway but it seems they were driving across the inlet to the course. We had set up to one side so we were reassured we weren’t in the way. Subsequent golfers were equally amused and encouraging, even flattering us on our efforts.
